Kathmandu, July 11: The Supreme Court on Sunday acquitted twelve Tibetans who were charged with carrying out ‘Free Tibet movement’ and issued a statement for their immediate release. A small crowd of Tibetans who had gathered to hear the verdict breathed a sigh of relief when the Judge announced his decision.
The twelve men were arrested on June 21 from the Boudhanath premises while returning from a monastery after attending a ceremony to offer prayers during the Buddhist holy month of Saka Dawa.

After being unable to provide enough evidence to support their case, the plaintiff were left to take back their charges which accused the twelve Tibetans of causing a major threat to Nepal’s ‘One China Foreign Policy’.
Following the verdict, the twelve men were released on Sunday evening after spending twenty days in jail. Those released are Lopsang Sherpa, Wangdi Gurung, Gato, Yote Lama, Tenzing Lama, Dhundup Tsering, Thupten Gyamtso, Gyaltsen, Dorjee Tsering, Rabgyal, Tenzing Phuntsok and Dorjee Lama.
Supporters clapped and cheered the men as they were released. The police were looking to book the Tibetans for 90 days of Preventive detention under its Public Security Act.
Members of the regional Tibetan Youth Congress had worked with United Nations Human Rights Commission to press for the release of the Tibetans.
In a similar case last March, Nepalese police arrested 15 Tibetan exiles in the capital Kathmandu following a scuffle with officers near the Buddhist shrine of Boudhanath. Police baton charged demonstrators who had gathered near the shrine for a prayer service organised by the Tibetan Refugee Welfare Office to mark the 52nd anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising. They were released after eleven days of imprisonment.
The Nepali government has stood strong on its stand to not let its land be used against China and has warned, time and again, of deportation to those who are found doing so.
